I found a new favorite at Suehiro today, Nabeyaki Udon (with egg, fish cake, shrimp, shitake and spinach.) *Yum* Suehiro is definitely not the best Japanese food in Little Tokyo, but its fast, cheap and it was the first place Mochi took me to in Little Tokyo way back when. It was a really good Udon! I was pleasantly surprised.
We were actually on our way down to Daikokuya (where you can find the best Ramen in Little Tokyo) but of course there was a line out the door even at 2:30 in the afternoon.

Just got back from El Coyote...the only place where I know the secret way to order a drink. Here's the trick, you order a margarita "straight up" with a side of ice and it's the same cost as margarita ordered with ice and you get twice as much margarita! (Thanks to Stoph for filling me in on this secret last time we went there). I have no idea how well known this is, but we'll call it a little secret to make me feel special!
This time I enjoyed the food as well. I got the Chicken & Rice (stewed chicken and veggies with rice and salad). Mochi got the Carnitas (yum!). Not much to say about the bland guacamole, but the margaritas make up for it!

Meltdown is the trendy new joint that just opened up in the "up n' coming" downtown Culver City area featuring a menu of melted sandwiches, both sweet and savory. We have been going down to that part of town for the last 3 years and its cool to see all these new businesses sprouting up down there. Its also nice to see something new that is not another wine bar. Meltdown opened a couple weeks ago, and I will do my best to get down there in the next couple weeks. From what I hear the hours are still limited to weekday lunch hours. I'm looking forward to when they get their breakfast melts going, but until then I think I'll go for the Classic 3 Cheese Sandwich (sharp cheddar, muenster and fontina on sourdough) and the Banana Nut (nutella and banana on egg Bread). Talk about comfort food! Check out the menu here.

If you're in Culver City and craving some simple healthy goodness, check out Tender Greens. We went there yesterday for the first time and it was so yummy. Love the atmosphere, we sat outside on this cute patio surrounded by planters of fresh herbs. The service was fast, people were friendly and the food was great. They also have a big enough menu that it would take a while to run out of options.
We both had the Ahi Tuna hot plates, mochi had a side simple salad and mashed Yukon gold potatoes (highly recommend tasting these!). I got the grilled veggies on the side which were so good. Note the employee's brown trucker-style hats (such a great little logo on them.)
Location: Tender Greens 9523 Culver Blvd. Culver City
Last night Moch and I went to BCD on Wilshire, my favorite place to go when I am sick. This is one of the things that makes me feel like I might as well be Korean (as my nephew once said).
I had never had something like this soon doo boo (soft tofu) stew until I started going to these Korean tofu houses 2 years ago. Last night I got my usual, Original Soon with Beef - mild. I found that the beef has more taste and is less fatty than the pork. Mochi usually gets the Gut Soon (yes, intestines) or the Galbi Beef Rib Combination w/Seafood Soon Tofu - Spicy (when you order spicy, expect spicy!).
The meal starts with "banchan" (lost of different little side dishes) which you can keep ordering becuase its included in the meal. They stopped serving the whole mackerel and replaced it with a salad with peanut dressing. Next they bring out the clay pot of rice and let is sit on your table for a while. When the boilng tofu pot comes out, you crack open an egg and mix it in. The waiter scoops out the rice into your rice dish and you are ready to go! BCD has many locations around Southern California, its great on a cold day.
Last night one of my vendors took a couple of us out to eat in Beverly Hills at Mastro's steakhouse. We are lucky enough to get dinner perks from one of our favorite vendors, which is now a legendary experience. It was one of the best meals I think I have eaten (ranks up there with Boulevard in SF and Bistro Jeanty in Napa Valley).
Cocktails started off with a Mastro's Cosmo, which was an amazing cosmopolitan with dry ice in it, so it was bubbly and smoking! It was a work of art, and was the best cosmo I've ever had. Definitely a splurge.
Here was what we ate:
Starters: Ahi Tartar, Toasted Cheese Ravioli, Prawns
Sides: Sauteed Spinach, Steamed Asparagus, Gorgonzola Macaroni and Cheese, Lobster Mashed Potatoes
Main Course: Chilean Sea Bass (I got the fish, while everyone else went with the Filet or
the Filet and Jumbo Lobster Tail. The meat was amazing, I stole a chunk of my boss' 18oz. filet. It melted in my mouth!) Sea Bass was fabulous. Flaked perfectly and it was a nice big piece.
Wine: We ordered about $800 in wine, with 4-5 different bottles. My favorite was this 2002
Sea Smoke SOUTHING
Pinot Noir. Wow, talk about a good wine! I wish I could remember the ones that were ordered after that. It might come back to me, I know one of them was $250!
At the end, I was just glad I wasn't floating the bill and I was thankful to be a part of such an indulgent affair!
Tonight Mochi and I ate at Buddha's Belly, on Beverly in between La Brea and Wilshire. T and her friend Mia were talking about it over facials today, Thai sounded good so we checked it out. The ambience was so nice. It felt like a peaceful sanctuary off of busy Beverly Blvd. It wasn't crowded and the service was great.
Here's what we ordered:
Crispy Soft Shell Crab - $7.95 ginger ponzu dipping sauce
Seared Ahi Tuna Salad - $10.95 sushi-grade ahi tuna, mixed greens, ginger, fried onion slivers,
wasabi, sesame seeds, ginger wasabi dressing
Ahi Tuna Burger with Sweet Potato Fries - $10.95
medium-rare ground sushi-grade ahi tuna patty, sweet hawaiian bun,
lettuce, tomato, avocado, spicy mayo, sesame seeds, sweet potato
fries
The food was great, next time I'm going to get something more filling than the Ahi Salad, though. The tuna was great and the dressing was amazing, but I think I'll get the curry next time.
